DNA evidence and rape cases
DNA evidence in case of rape is a crucial part of an investigation and it is highly important in convicting the right person or discovering charlatans.
But first, let’s check up some terms. DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid. This is a substance found in our cells and carries the genetic material of every person. This is a unique genetic imprint of a human. The discovery of DNA has made possible for investigators to discover criminals much faster in most cases being the only evidence needed. The evidence is a piece of material (blood, cloths, saliva, hair, placement, date of arrival etc) that proves a certain thing about a certain person.
Rape is a violent sex act that occurs without the acceptant of a person that in this case is called victim. The raped people can be women, children but also man.
The rape has a great impact over the victim this is why rape is considered a serious crime and is punished harsh in all states including Muslim believers that don’t really appreciate women. But how do scientists determine the guilty person by DNA?
First, the evidence must be collected. This can be done whether the victim is dead or alive. Samples are being taken from the victim’s genital area, from under the victim nails, also clothing or strange hair on the body, meaning that has a different color or that is not attached to the victim’s body. After this being done, police look for the suspicious person by first asking the victim. If the victim gives a description than the police do the best it can to find the guy. Once it does, the DNA test is performed. Basically, the guy gives a sample of blood or hair even saliva and this get’s check at special labs by being compared with the evidence taken from the victim. Sperm, in this case. This fluid has a great DNA content and the accuracy is 99, 99% so it can never be wrong when it comes to conviction. Until now, the medical examiner could only see that the victim was raped because of the physical traumatisms existing in the genital are, but now they can determine accuratly who did it and in this case why is less important. Rape is punished in the same way even if a hooker was raped or a church going mother of tow and married.
After this way of proving the guilt or the innocence of a person convicted for rap emerged, a lot of cases ware reopened and many arrests ware conducted. In cases in which children resulted from the rape or in which police still had evidence from the victim like skin from under the nails and sperm ( the fluid could only be detected but not determined who it belonged to) ware immediately reopened and the convicted by DNA arrested. Most criminals that like to do this think that my using a condom they won’t get caught. This is totally false. Why? Because DNA is in every mark that they live on the victim’s body, like drops of blood from the struggle, hair or skin.
